Introducing University of Ioannina
The University of Ioannina (UOI) is located in Ioannina, Epirus, 438km north-west of Athens, Greece. The UOI School of Philosophy first operated in the academic year 1964-65, as a branch of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, admitting 200 students. In 1970 UOI was established as an independent institution.
The University is located in a 3,500-acre campus, 6km from the city center of Ioannina. It is housed in buildings of a total of 236,000 sq. meters.
The University of Ioannina has made a considerable contribution both to the academic and scientific community. Its infrastructure and staff make it one of the most important peripheral educational institutions and one of the greatest State-run organizations operating in the Epirus Region.
UOI Department of Philology
The Department of Philology of the UOI offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Greek philology, offering three specializations: Classical studies, Byzantine and Contemporary Greek Literature and Linguistics.
The Linguistics Division
The aim of the Linguistics Division is to introduce students to the foundations of Linguistics and provide basic knowledge and experience in all fields of Linguistics. Its activities involve:
Teaching
The Linguistics Division offers basic Linguistics courses to undergraduate students of Philology, as well as specialization in Linguistics to postgraduate students, with emphasis on theoretical syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics and language acquisition.
Research
The Linguistics Division offers plenty of research opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students as part of Linguistics courses or as part of postgraduate/PhD theses.
The staff of the Linguistics Division also participates in Nationally and internationally funded research projects which have included:
- “Documentation and analysis of an endangered language: aspects of the grammar of Griko”.
- “Individual Differences in Anaphora Resolution: Linguistic and Cognitive effects”, “IDAR”.
