Patakis Publishers was founded over 40 years ago, in 1974, by Stefanos Patakis and his wife Melpomene Patakis. The first publications were in the area of educational books. Now, 43 years later, Patakis Publishers publishes books in all fields, with its key areas of publishing activity being in education, books for children and young adults, literature, the humanities, dictionaries, as well as practical guides and diaries.
Annually, Patakis Publishers publishes up to 400 new titles and its general catalogue counts 6.000 titles in print, as well as other educational material.
Patakis Publishers cooperates with the Pedagogical Institute of the Greek Ministry of Education. To date 101 book titles and other educational materials have been approved by the Pedagogical Institute for the official schoolbooks lists.
With its dictionaries unit Patakis Publishers is taking a long-term view to publishing. After 19 years of intensive work, in 2007 the Dictionary of Modern Greek Literature was published, a very big project of 2.500 pages. In parallel a team of lexicographers has been working for 20 years on the completion of another major project, the Greater Dictionary of the Greek Language, to be published shortly. Patakis Publishers are also planning ahead in view of digital developments in publishing and e-books.
